So I have seriously considered purchasing a new Mitsubishi Mirage as my next daily driver in about a year.
I will be buying a "fun" car this spring/summer. It will be something to modify, to play with, to drive when nice out, and not worry about if it breaks while racing/driving/modding since it will not be my everyday car. So my daily does not need to be an all out bad ass car.
Now for the daily, I was thinking about going after a used Lexus IS 250/350, used Lancer Ralliart sport back, used Evo X, or maybe even a LOW mileage Lexus IS 300. But since I do not drive my car much (to and from work, and SOMETIMES some other random places, all other times we all take the miniature van), I was thinking why not get something new(er) and less expensive. No sense in paying $300-$400 a month on a luxury badge (Lexus) or a "sporty" car (Evo/Ralliart), or getting a first gen IS and worry about how much it was beat on before me.
I have been to the Mitsu site a handful of times and built a Mirage. Each time, the payment is in the high $200's. I think the highest I got so far was $275. That's nothing! Insurance will be cheaper, gas will be cheaper, and I will not modify the Mirage like I would any other car on my daily driver list.
But why a Mirage you ask? It's in my blood I guess...

I like them, and I'm not afraid to admit it. They're more or less the most basic new car you can buy in the US right now. It's like a third world car, and I mean that as a compliment.

I still ask why a Mirage? In what way is it a better choice than a Fiesta or Mazda2?

BECAUSE BRAND LOYALTY!!
Not real sure actually. I have owned about 10 other Mirages in the past, so why not look into a new one?

Haha. Ok. I'm just saying...subcompact sounds like it could be the way to go for you, but just test drive the other ones before making a decision.

Fiesta 1.0L. Added coolness thanks to turbo'd 3 cylinder with no automatic option.

I'm encouraging you to do this. And as an owner of a Chevrolet Metro, I feel qualified to speak about it. Definitely get a manual though, the CVT will probably kill you with boredom, but the manual? Shit. You can rev the balls out of it and never go anywhere. It's AWESOME. It feels like you're going 90 around a bend, but you're only going like 35.

i bought my wife one with a cvt and she is constantly getting above EPA mpg readings. and forums suggest that the MT can easilly get even higher mpg numbers than the CVT. if you rev it out it accelerates pretty quickly and you can fit NA miata tires on the factorry alloys or get cheap long lasting $35 tires online. so you can pretty much turn it into whatever you want or leave as is.
